only if we pay attention.

When we watch a kid grows, we would notice every single small development they made. We cherish and make celebration of every single step they take. We appreciate moments like when they first call us mom or dad, when they first able to stand up, when they first take their first step, when they first go to school, and so many other first moments. So many that it become an exhaustive list that keeps on having new first times added on a daily basis.

And so, when did this stop? Why, when we grow up, we stop appreciate our first time moment when the truth is as we keep on growing up every day, we will always have a first time moment.

I tried to incorporate a small exercise when writing my daily journal where I would notice the first time moments I had that day and it made me more grateful with life than I ever had. I started to notice a small details we often neglect and not appreciate it at all.

There are some big and easily noticable first time moments, indeed. For me it was things like first time going umra together with my husband, first time seeing a zebra snake on the ocean floor when I snorkle, or first time walking 25,000 steps a day. As those things repeats, I am not as appreciating it as when it first happened when the truth is, there will never be the exact same thing happened twice.

I start to notice even to a smaller detail. For example, there is this one bakery in Lund that I have visited for several times, but today I appreciate my first time moment for being their first customer of the day, it is also my first time ordering their coffee cream bun, it is also my first time eating it and drinking coffee while people watching. The list can go on forever because from a single moment, there were so many first things happened. And if you asked me about the day, I think I have a thousands of first things that happened that day.

Then, it also leads me to notice that we indeed still grow up everyday. It is not about my first step I took anymore, but moments like when I first time feeling okay over something that used to make my heart aches. I appreciate more first time moments and be grateful for myself like when I was brave enough for the first time to ask question I think was stupid but I ask anyway in class. I appreciate myself for my first time being brave enough to confront someone who hurt me. I appreciate myself for my first time not being too shy to ask if the food a restaurant sell contain ingredients I cannot eat or not. There are so many first time things and when I notice it, I realize how much I have grown as a person.

So when we actually notice, life is still so beautiful. When we notice, we were never running out of new experience every single day.

So, what’s your first time moments today?
